Layers of the Human Energy Body and the Importance of Chakras
The human physical body, like the human energy body, is a complex and interdependent multisystem. Each energy system of the human body is connected to the physical system. The two planes are correlated and interconnected through the neurological and endocrine systems.
Chakras: Intersection of Vital Forces and Aspects of Consciousness
Chakras represent an intersection of vital forces, with each center representing a specific aspect of consciousness. These centers receive, assimilate, and transmit vital energy, and through them, we learn how to relate to life. Each chakra can be seen as a program on a disk, influencing various aspects of our lives, from survival and sexual programs to thought patterns and emotions.
Chakras act as bridges between different dimensions such as emotions and thoughts, connecting them to the physical body. These interactions play a significant role in how we interact with others and, consequently, influence external activities.
The Seven Basic Chakras and Their Role in Our Lives
There are seven basic chakras, located in the subtle body and penetrating the physical body. They are situated near the seven major nerve ganglia on the spinal column, connecting our physical existence to deeper and higher realms.
In addition to Hindu literature, several metaphysical systems talk about the seven levels of man, nature, or the seven physical planes. The number seven can be found beyond myths or religion. The rainbow has seven colors, the Western musical scale has seven notes, the week has seven days, and major life cycles are divided into periods of seven years.
Alongside the seven basic chakras, there are also “secondary chakras,” if we can call them that. Some of these are located in the palms, and anyone can experience how energy feels when a chakra opens. For example, try this simple exercise:
- Extend both arms in front of you, with palms facing each other.
- Start rubbing your palms together vigorously.
- Then rapidly open and close your palms about ten times.
- Now keep your palms facing each other, as if holding a large egg between your hands, and focus your attention on the space between them. You should feel a subtle “energy ball” moving in a circular motion between your palms.
Here are the seven basic chakras and their associations:
- First Chakra: Located at the base of the spine, associated with survival, and connected to the earth element.
- Second Chakra: Located in the lower abdomen, associated with emotions and sexuality, and connected to the water element.
- Third Chakra: Located in the solar plexus, associated with personal power, will, and self-respect, and connected to the fire element.
- Fourth Chakra: Located above the sternum, associated with love, and connected to the air element.
- Fifth Chakra: Located in the throat, associated with communication and creativity, and connected to the element of sound.
- Sixth Chakra: Located in the middle of the forehead, associated with clairvoyance, intuition, and imagination, and connected to the element of light.
- Seventh Chakra: Located at the crown of the head, associated with knowledge, understanding, and transcendent consciousness, and connected to the element of thought.
Working with Chakras and Understanding Activation Differences
Chakras can be closed, open, overactive, underactive, or in any other intermediate form.
If a chakra is blocked and closed, it cannot generate or receive its specific energy. A closed chakra involves the chronic rejection of certain types of energy. An open or overactive chakra tends to direct all energies toward its specific plane. An overactive chakra leads to chronic fixation.
For example, when someone has a completely closed first chakra, they may experience a lack of focus, codependency, feelings of abandonment, and lack of support. When this chakra is open, the same person feels secure, confident, and focused on what they desire. An overactive first chakra may make this person impatient and impulsive, always wanting more than they currently have.
Working with chakras involves continuous effort that can span a lifetime.
Aligning Chakras and Working with Universal and Earth Energy
To work with chakras, alignment is necessary. This is done by maintaining a straight spine, respecting its physiological curves, and feeling a sense of elongation and upliftment throughout.
From a seated position, push the crown of your head upward toward the ceiling while keeping your feet firmly grounded as though someone is pulling your head and ankles in opposite directions, elongating the entire spine. Once the spine is “arranged,” and the chakras are aligned, you can connect with the energy of manifestation.
Focus your attention on the central axis of your body, feeling it, and then direct your attention to the crown of your head, imagining a funnel forming at the crown through which you perceive Universal energy entering your body. Visualize this energy moving along the central axis of your body, through your entire spine, reaching each chakra.
First, you charge your head with Universal energy, and then it descends through your throat, shoulders, back, chest, abdomen, pelvis, buttocks, lower limbs, and finally, the tips of your fingers. Visualize this energy penetrating deep into the earth. Inhale to bring this energy into your body, and exhale to let it reach the center of the earth. You can visualize this energy as silver, golden, or bright white.
Once you are comfortable working with Universal energy, you can do the same with earth energy, the ascending current. Imagine how you breathe and raise earth energy, starting from your toes, soles, calves, thighs, pelvis, buttocks, abdomen, chest, back, arms, shoulders, throat, and reaching the crown of your head. Let it exit through the crown, releasing any tension it encounters. Visualize this energy as red-brown, rising through your entire body, charging it with
earth’s energy.
Work separately with these energies until you feel their smooth flow within your body. Then, try to work with both energies at the same time, observing how they mix at each chakra level.
During the day, try to remain connected to these currents of manifestation and observe which one is stronger during specific moments or activities. Identify the primary needs of your body and which energy current it requires more to work on dissolving blockages.
