Spring is the opportune time for planning summer vacations, but I believe that this season is also suitable for thinking about how to spend our winter holidays.

It is well known that the fitness requirements of skiers are often underestimated, and early planning ensures the physical preparation needed to get in shape for an active winter vacation. In fact, this represents the objective of your training during the summer and autumn seasons.

The more we plan and book in advance, the more options we have in terms of cost and locations. The joy of the cold season lies in the perspective and culture of the chosen place, relaxation, as well as the specific physical activity of winter.

The mountains will always be a “magnet” that attracts tourists for a successful winter vacation.

SPECTACULAR DOLOMITES MOUNTAINS

The Italian Dolomites are impressive, boasting some of the most breathtaking mountain landscapes in the world, and the South Tyrol region is also one of the best areas in Europe for cross-country skiing. The region offers over 1000 kilometers of trails spread throughout the area.

SOUTH TYROL REGION

The Dolomites are located in the Alps, on the border between Italy and Austria, presenting a series of peaks and summits that are quite independent from the rest of the Alps. They are geographically situated in northern Italy but “feel only partially Italian.” Many locals speak a local mountain dialect called “Ladin,” which is more similar to German than Italian.

South Tyrol is an Italian province that has historically had strong ties to Austria for an extended period of time. Therefore, there is a strong German-Austrian influence in the region.

The region is called “Südtirol” in German and “Alto Adige” in Italian. The mountainous area is a UNESCO World Heritage site and combines Austrian, German, and Italian cultures, cuisine, and folklore.

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING

Cross-country skiing equipment is very lightweight, and the boots are small in size. Once you are on skis, you can learn how to navigate the beautiful landscape in just a few hours, moving on skis and using poles in an alternating motion, similar to the movement performed on an elliptical machine in the gym. Recreational cross-country skiing burns 600 calories per hour, so do not underestimate the workout. Unlike classic downhill skiing, which burns very few calories, cross-country skiing can be an intense and exhausting exercise while allowing you to relax and enjoy the surrounding scenery at the same time.

WHERE TO PRACTICE CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING

Dobbiaco is one of the most suitable areas for cross-country skiing. Cross-country skiing in Dobbiaco offers different types of trails for each level. Additionally, Dobbiaco is the location of international cross-country skiing competitions in the World Cup. The area offers 120 kilometers of cross-country skiing trails. Whether you want to push your limits or simply explore the natural beauty of the area, there are several itineraries and guides or instructors available to guide you.

The Azzurra cross-country ski school is located at the Nordic Arena Stadium in Dobbiaco and offers lessons for various age groups, including children from 4 years old and up, teenagers, adults, and seniors.

ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS

There are multiple accommodation options to stay in Dobbiaco, near the Nordic Arena, but at the same time, you can choose to stay in the surrounding area. Dobbiaco offers a multitude of cabins and hotels with enchanting views, friendly staff, and delicious dishes.

PICTURESQUE BRIXEN TOWN

In the picturesque town of Brixen, there is the GrunerBaum Hotel, consisting of four buildings, 180 rooms, and 5000 square meters of wellness facilities, right in the heart of the town.

IN THE MOUNTAINS

Another accommodation option is the Glinzhof Agriturismo Hotel, located halfway up the mountain, in a spectacular natural setting.

NEAR VENICE

Close to Venice, Hotel LA TORRE is a quality hotel at a reasonable price, where you can practice cross-country skiing “right at the doorstep.” The hotel is located near beautiful trails that wind through the forest.

TRAVEL OPTIONS

The fastest and most affordable way to travel to the Dolomites is to book a flight to Innsbruck or Venice, as both cities are within driving distance of the Dolomite resorts.

If you fly to Venice, there are many affordable flights to Treviso Airport, which is closer to South Tyrol than the international airport. It is a beautiful route to travel, taking two to three hours depending on the location where you choose to stay in the region.

Depending on your chosen mode of transportation, if you are heading to Venice, you can make a stop in the renowned Prosecco region for a wine tasting and gourmet meal after burning many calories skiing in the Dolomites.
